Somali pirates boast of having families in Britain

Two of the Somali pirates who kidnapped yacht couple Paul and Rachel Chandler have boasted of having families in Britain.
The gang members, who held the British couple for 13 months, claimed they were set to join their relatives in the UK during tense negotiations to release the pair.
One of the pirate leaders said he now plans to travel to Britain to join his wife and two children, who he says have lived in London for three years after claiming political asylum.
The other is also believed to have family in London. The revelation comes as police probe links with Somalia after the Chandlers were freed for an unspecified ransom.
In a phone call a 32-yearold named Hassan talks about rejoining his wife and children in London, but says: “I’m not looking forward to the cold weather.”
He adds: “I am also worried that women are more powerful in the UK.”

Paul and Rachel Chandler, the British couple held captive by Somali pirates for more than a year after their yacht was hijacked, want to make closer contact with the people of Somalia and try to persuade the international community to help restore law and order in their country.

Abdudwaq, Somalia (AHN) – Radio Abudwaq, which is based in the Abdudwaq district of the Galgudud region of central Somalia, was closed down by fighters loyal to Somalia’s moderate Ahlu Sunna Waljama’ (ASWJ), witnesses said late Wednesday.
“All the journalists were shocked and surprised when they’ve seen tens of gunmen who are at center of the studio,” a stringer said. Abdikarim Ahmed Bulhan, a journalist who works at the station, told local press that heavily armed fighters from Ahlu Sunna Waljama’ got into the station and ordered it off the air.
Bulhan told Shabelle, a local radio station, that Ahlu Sunna ordered the radio station not to reopen until the station’s administration got permission from Ahlu Sunna Waljama’ authorities.
